My Life As a Slow Learner and Late Bloomer

Photogaph by Jose Padua
When my parents
came to America
from the Philippines
the furthest either
of them had gone
in school was
the eighth grade.
It wasn’t until
I was in high
school and began
venturing beyond the
assigned reading
that I was no longer
embarrassed by this.
And it wasn’t
until I was out
of school completely
reading the small print
in the back of a newspaper
that I understood
how hard it is
to be from
somewhere else.
